Biography

Sometime in the middle of 1977, Peter Beckett and J.C. Crowley met at a Hollywood party and planted the seed of what was to become PLAYER. The two found each other interesting in their diversity: Beckett, a rock musician from Liverpool, England, and Crowley, a country singer from Galveston Bay, Texas.

Within a week, they started writing songs together. A short time later, they enlisted the help of Ronn Moss on bass and John Friesen on drums. The band members agreed to the name PLAYER after seeing movie credits where the actors were listed as “The Players”.

After Robert Stigwood signed PLAYER to RSO, they enjoyed success for many years following their number one single, “Baby Come Back,” which was co-written by Beckett and Crowley and sung by Beckett. They toured with Eric Clapton, Heart and Boz Scaggs among others.

Eventually J.C. Crowley left the band to record a solo country album and Ronn Moss left the band to become Ridge Forrester on the popular CBS daytime soap, The Bold and the Beautiful.

Beckett continued to write and produce several more albums as PLAYER. Concurrently, he spent nine years as a featured artist in Little River Band, writing several singles for them and performing “Baby Come Back” at every show. He has also penned music for many movies and television shows, along with writing hits for other artists, including Olivia Newton-John, Kenny Rogers and The Temptations. Peter Beckett has written and sung 56 songs that were recorded by Player.

Ronn Moss rejoined PLAYER in 1996. Shortly after that, PLAYER’s fifth album, Lost In Reality, was released, which was written and produced by Beckett. PLAYER continued to tour as much as possible around Moss’s hectic TV shooting schedule for The Bold and the Beautiful until Moss left the show in 2012.

In 2012, Beckett was approached by Frontiers Records to write and produce a new PLAYER CD. The CD was released in 2013 under the title, Too Many Reasons, the same year that PLAYER toured with Christopher Cross and others as part of the Sail Rock 2013 tour. In 2015 PLAYER was part of the Rock the Yacht tour, and in 2016 they were a part of the Yacht Rock tour.

The revival of “Yacht Rock” featuring the smooth rock of the 70’s and 80’s has been steadily growing and “Baby Come Back” is listed as one of the top ten “Yacht Rock” songs of all time.

Peter Beckett's Player is still going strong with lead singer Peter Beckett at the helm, well into their 40th year. 2019 promises a new CD and all the show dates will be displayed on Peter Beckett's PLAYER website.
